ASBOLUS
ASBOLUS
The Department of Disaster Foresight and Existential Turbulence

(Where the universe files warnings everyone ignores until the hallway starts vibrating.)
Designation: ASB–0
Status: Reluctantly accurate, emotionally overworked, already warned you twice
Location: Between omen and consequence
Known Alias: “The Forecast Office of Things You Pretend Not to Notice”

Mission Summary

Asbolus is the Chronocosm’s early-warning system: a weathered Centaur-class observer stationed at the edge of incoming disaster, emotional turbulence, pattern collapse, and suspiciously meaningful silence.
Its function is to detect:
omens pretending to be coincidences
consequences forming before anyone admits the cause
ancestral weather fronts
emotional pressure drops
events labeled “probably fine”
situations that are absolutely not fine
the exact moment a hallway becomes symbolic
When asked why it keeps issuing reports no one reads, Asbolus responded:
“Because being ignored does not make me wrong.”
It then filed a warning memo so accurate that three crew members became angry retroactively.

Personality Profile

Temperament: Dry, fatalistic, professionally unimpressed
Communication Style: Weather reports, bad news, pointed silence, clipboard prophecy
Energy Signature: Ominous pressure change before the storm
Emotional Range: Mild concern → catastrophic “I told you so”

Hobbies:
Filing warnings before anyone asks
Watching people call obvious patterns “mood swings”
Predicting disasters with excellent grammar
Quietly standing near exits
Marking reports “URGENT” and then being ignored
Judging Neptune’s emotional humidity

Official Motto:
“The warning was not vague. You were distracted.”

Core Departmental Divisions

1. The Office of Incoming ConsequencesMonitors all events currently pretending to be unrelated.
Common file labels include:
“This will matter later”
“They are definitely going to regret this”
“Unstable but currently smiling”
“Do not ignore the third coincidence”
“Crew says fine; instruments disagree”

Their desks are covered in storm charts, cold tea, and reports stamped:
PREDICTABLE.

2. The Bureau of Existential Weathe

Tracks non-physical atmospheric conditions, including:
ancestral fog
regret drizzle
pressure systems caused by unsent messages
winds of accidental honesty
sudden temperature drops near old memories
emotional thunderstorms forming over quiet people
Employees describe their work as:
“meteorology, but for the soul having consequences.”

3. The Department of Ignored Omens

Handles all signs that were obvious in retrospect.
Examples include:
the dream that felt too specific
the bird that appeared at the wrong time
the sentence someone said twice
the object that broke dramatically
the silence after the joke
the sudden need to check on someone
the feeling that “something is off”

All ignored omens are archived under:
YOU NOTICED. YOU JUST NEGOTIATED WITH IT.

4. The Pholus Chain-Reaction Desk

Specializes in small openings that become large disasters.
Deals with:
one sentence that changes the room
one confession that changes the timeline
one unlocked file
one opened bottle
one “quick conversation” that becomes a life review
one tiny decision that makes Saturn take notes
Office warning sign:
DO NOT TOUCH THE CORK UNLESS READY FOR CENTAUR WEATHER.

5. The Chironian Supercell Unit

Monitors wounds that begin behaving like weather systems.
Tracks:
old pain gathering moisture
healing fronts approaching unwilling subjects
shame fog lifting at inconvenient times
truth lightning
cathartic precipitation
humiliating insight with medicinal properties
Unofficial staff note:
“Healing is just disaster with a better outcome.”

Psychological Function in the Chronocosm

Asbolus governs disaster foresight — not disaster itself, but the perception of incoming consequence before it becomes visible to everyone else.

It regulates:
premonitory unease
pattern recognition before proof
emotional barometric pressure
the body’s sense that something is wrong
ancestral alarm systems
the uncomfortable gift of knowing too early
the burden of being correct before being believed

If the Kuiper Belt stores what you forgot, Asbolus forecasts when it will return.
If Pluto transforms what can no longer remain hidden, Asbolus notices the first crack.
If Neptune blurs the room, Asbolus checks the humidity and says:
“That is not mist. That is avoidance.”
If Saturn enforces the lesson, Asbolus files the warning before the lesson becomes mandatory.

Jung & Freud on Asbolus

Jung’s InterpretationJung regarded Asbolus as the omen-bearing function of the psyche — the part of consciousness that notices symbolic weather before the ego understands the forecast.

He insisted Asbolus reflects:
the intuitive warning system
the symbolic reading of outer events
the psyche’s relationship with synchronicity
the archetype of the seer no one believes
the moment when coincidence becomes instruction

He called it, with respect:
“The dark meteorologist of the unconscious.”

Freud’s InterpretationFreud, observing Asbolus, sighed deeply and said:
“Anxiety. Highly organized anxiety.”

He described Asbolus as:
the anticipatory alarm of repressed material
a symptom forecast office
the mind preparing for what it refuses to confess
proof that humans know before they admit knowing
a region containing “too many fathers, storms, and poorly managed instincts”

He filed it under:
Predictive Neurotic Weather, With Mythological Complications.
Asbolus annotated Freud’s report:
“Not wrong. Incomplete. Typical.”

Documented Asbolus Events

Event #17 — The Corridor Pressure DropCrew members reported the sudden feeling that “something was about to happen.”
Nothing happened for six hours.
Then everything happened at once.
Asbolus had already filed the report.
No one apologized.

Event #42 — The Regret DrizzleA low-pressure emotional front passed over Pallas, causing seventeen crew members to remember things they had said with confidence.
Three hid in storage.
One wrote poetry.
The coffee dispenser refused service.

Event #88 — The “I Told You So” Suppression FailureAsbolus attempted professional restraint after a predicted disaster unfolded exactly as stated.
Restraint lasted four minutes.

The final report contained only one sentence:
“See attached previous report.”

Event #109 — The Pholus Corridor OpeningOne crew member said:
“It’s probably nothing.”
The sentence triggered a chain reaction involving one confession, two broken mugs, an ancestral dream, and MOP-46 refusing to clean the mess hall.

Asbolus marked the event:
CLASSIC.

Event #203 — The Chironian SupercellA healing event formed unexpectedly over The Arc, producing heavy tears, administrative honesty, and several medically necessary naps.
Visibility was poor.
Insight was unavoidable.
Asbolus concluded:
“Storm passed. Structure improved. Crew annoyed.”

Official Asbolus Policies

Policy 1 — A Warning Is Still Valid If IgnoredFailure to read the forecast does not cancel the weather.

Policy 2 — Coincidences Must Be Logged After the Third Occurrence
One is an incident.
Two is suspicious.
Three is paperwork.

Policy 3
— Do Not Argue With Pressure Changes
If the emotional atmosphere drops suddenly, stop pretending the room is normal.
It is not.

Policy 4 — “Probably Fine” Requires Immediate Review
All statements containing “probably fine” must be submitted to Asbolus for disaster screening.
Most are rejected.

Policy 5 --
The Storm Is Not Personal, But It Has Your Address
Existential weather may affect all crew members differently.
Some will cry.
Some will clean.
Some will stand near windows waiting for music that is not coming.
All responses must be documented.

Policy 6 — The Forecast Was Not PessimisticIt was accurate.
There is a difference.

Asbolus’s Closing Statement

Delivered through a cracked pressure gauge, three cold drafts, and one memo nobody wanted to open:
“You do not need prophecy to see what is coming.
You need the courage to stop calling the obvious mysterious.”

A second footnote appears:
“…and to stop blaming the weather after ignoring the clouds.”

And beneath it, stamped in dark blue ink:
“Forecast filed. Consequences pending.”
ASBOLUS’S EXISTENTIAL WEATHER REPORT

Chronocosm Emotional Forecast Division

Filed: Reluctantly, but on time
Validity: Next 48 Hours
Issuing Authority: Department of Disaster Foresight & Existential Turbulence
Accuracy Rating: Regrettably High
Forecast Type: Psychological / Ancestral / Inconveniently Accurate
Storm Class: Centaur-Class Emotional Front
Recommended Equipment: Coat, tea, humility, one emotionally stable chair

CURRENT CONDITIONS: THE CALM THAT KNOWS TOO MUCH

At present, the skies above Pallas and The Arc are clear.

Suspiciously clear.
This is not peace.
This is paperwork waiting for a signature.

Atmospheric pressure is falling — not the physical kind, but the kind caused by long-suppressed memories, unfinished conversations, poorly buried truths, and the sense that something important was misplaced in 2009 and has now retained legal counsel.

Crew members may experience:
  • mild pressure behind the eyes
  • an inexplicable need to reorganize personal lockers
  • sudden distrust of quiet hallways
  • faint tingling in the spleen
  • the feeling that a consequence has arrived early and is waiting near the hydration unit

This is the Nessus Front approaching.
Do not argue with it.
It has already won the appeal.

Chronocosm Note:
Nessus weather is never “just weather.” It is unresolved inheritance wearing boots.

0–12 HOURS: DRIZZLE OF NOSTALGIC REGRET

A light but persistent drizzle will fall — not on decks, but on thoughts.
You may suddenly remember:
  • a sentence you should not have said
  • a letter you did not send
  • a haircut you defended at the time
  • an outfit that believed in itself too much
  • a person you were “definitely over” in three separate timelines

Visibility will be excellent.
Unfortunately, what you will see is yourself.

Precautionary Measure:
Carry an emotional umbrella.
Recommended model: a firm, well-practiced “No.”
Avoid the collapsible version labeled “Maybe, if they need me.”
It has failed every inspection.

Chronocosm Note:
Nostalgia is rain from a cloud that remembers your password.

12–24 HOURS: WINDS OF ACCIDENTAL HONESTY

Winds will pick up suddenly and without committee approval.
The Pholus Corridor opens near the airlocks. This creates a chain reaction effect.

Symptoms include:
  • starting sentences with “Actually…”
  • correcting people who did not ask
  • confessing opinions that were meant to die quietly
  • telling someone “I never liked that couch” with the energy of a courtroom witness
  • explaining your entire emotional history to a vending machine because it beeped sympathetically

WARNING:

If you feel compelled to say:
“I’ve always thought…”
Stop immediately.
Swallow the sentence.
Blame the ventilation system.
If the sentence escapes anyway, do not chase it.
It belongs to the wind now.
Chronocosm Note:
Pholus does not cause the disaster. Pholus opens the bottle and says, “Interesting.”

24–48 HOURS: THE CHIRONIAN SUPERCELL

A major system forms.
This one is personal.
A Centaur-Class Event — large, slow-moving, medicinally humiliating, and incapable of being ignored.

Precipitation:
Heavy tears.
Mostly cathartic.
Some administrative.
A few may require signatures.
Visibility:
Low due to dense Fog of Denial, lifting around Hour 36 when a single humiliating insight strikes like lightning and ruins everything — in a productive way.

Temperature:
Initially Kuiper-Belt cold.
Gradually warming to:
“I suppose I can live with this.”
Later conditions may include:
“I understand why that happened.”
“I hate that this helped.”
“Fine. Growth.”

Chronocosm Note:
Chiron weather does not wound you for sport. It simply points to the wound you built furniture around.

ASBOLUS’S SAFETY ADVISORIES

Secure Loose FeelingsAny unaddressed emotion may be lifted, spun twice, and thrown directly back at you — usually in public.

This includes:
  • grief stored under “later”
  • anger labeled “I’m fine”
  • tenderness disguised as sarcasm
  • ancient family disappointment
  • the one feeling you keep calling “just tired”

Use emotional tie-down straps.
Do not use denial.
Denial is not rated for Centaur winds.

Chronocosm Note:
Loose feelings become projectiles when ignored long enough.

Avoid The Loop

If you suspect you have lived this Tuesday before, you have.
Do not attempt to defeat the loop through dramatic insight alone.

Approved disruption methods include:
  • changing your socks
  • drinking water
  • telling the truth once
  • refusing to repeat the same argument with better vocabulary
  • moving one symbolic object from one side of the room to the other and pretending this is strategy

Change your socks immediately to disrupt the timeline.
Preferably both socks.
The Kuiper Belt is watching for half-measures.

Chronocosm Note:
Loops are not punishment. They are unfinished lessons with poor design aesthetics.

MOP-46 ALERT

Keep MOP-46 away from the mess hall.

The Truth-Spill Index is currently 8.5/10, and the floors remember everything.
If a confession, revelation, or ancestral soup incident occurs, notify Maintenance before Neptune arrives and calls it “beautiful.”
Do not allow MOP-46 to absorb unresolved prophecy.

Last time, it began whispering in Old Galactic and refused to clean near Saturn.

Chronocosm Note:
Every ship needs a mop. Not every mop should be trusted with truth.

Corridor Conduct Warning

Crew members experiencing existential weather are asked not to stand dramatically in corridors unless officially scheduled.
Unscheduled corridor brooding causes traffic delays and encourages ghosts.

Approved brooding zones:
  • Observation Deck 2
  • the quiet end of the hydroponics bay
  • any chair facing away from responsibility
  • designated melancholy alcove near Storage Unit B

Unapproved brooding zones:
  • airlocks
  • engine rooms
  • Neptune’s blanket fortress
  • anywhere the Captain has to step around you

Chronocosm Note:

Drama is allowed. Obstruction is not.

FINAL NOTICE

Posted Too Late, As Usual

Asbolus reports:
The storm is not arriving to destroy you.
It is arriving to reorganize you without consent.
Please understand: this is not cruelty.
This is weather.
Very rude weather.
But weather nonetheless.

Also:
Wear a coat.
Your ancestors are watching.
They are concerned about your chest.

One of them has already said:
“I told you to dress warmer.”
Three others agree.
Saturn has stamped the advisory.
Pluto has read it silently.
Neptune has made it damp.

Chiron has added a footnote about healing.
Pholus opened something he should not have opened.
Nessus says this was inevitable.
Asbolus says he literally filed the report yesterday.
Nobody listened.

Again.

Filed, stamped, and absolutely not open to revision.

Signed:
Asbolus

Final Chronocosm Note:
“The future rarely arrives unannounced. You simply call the warning signs ‘mood swings.’”
